Digital Painting (27/9/16

c24729w01

During our second lesson with Will, we played around with digital painting/sketching by using the above Wacom tablet within Photoshop, we then experimented with all the brush presets and settings and pressure sensitivity.

capturesssss

To enter the brush presets you go into the folder with the three different brushes like shown above which is can be found at the top left of the screen within Photoshop which takes you to the window below.

capture

When you open the brushes folder, it takes you to the options above.Within the different presets available you can edit individually the brush of your choice, which allows you to use specific styles and techniques; being able to change the size of the brush, the hardness and spacing of the brush effect and so on. Using the Wacom tablet with these effects provides a much better freehand sketch which can be easier to portray a specific feeling or message with the vast and unique options you have.

fungry

We had a play with the Wacom tablet, producing a business card of such for a made up brand – the main aspect which we were focusing on was of course the pressure sensitivity, luckily for me, my computer didn’t have the latest update/hardrive so the pressure sensitivity was just about the only effect I couldn’t experiment with, which was a bit of a pain! So I went back and created a new one below which had the pressure sensitivity enabled.

untitled-1

As you can see the pressure sensitivity does benefit while using the Wacom tablet as you can be more detailed and precise .

Layer Groups/Naming Files/DPI (Photoshop Basics)

layer-group

Grouping layers is an easy way of making your Photoshop file easily accessible, and more simplistic – without having to look through multiple layers which can be confusing and make you lose track of which layers what. You can also name layers by double clicking on the layer,or right clicking the layer which brings up the ‘rename’ option. As you can see from the above image there are 6 layers making up the green face above, each layer has eye’s, mouth, nose..etc

layer-group-2

By (SHIFT) clicking all of the layers this will select them all, bringing up various layer options, find the group layers option which will simply allow you to create a layer group/

layer-group-3

You can name the layer group so you know what objects can be found where which keeps items within your file neat and tidy.

layer-group-4

The above image shows what the grouped layer will look like once it’s been created. You can then move the group layer above or below other layers which correlates the same effect as a normal layer doe(hiding layers/showing-putting layers above).

name-file-and-dpi

You can name your desired file whatever you want when you initially create the file, giving you the options shown above. All options are vital for the type of file you want to produce but important features include the Resolution (DPI-dots per inch) which are altered when producing work which will be displayed differently; (Digital-72) which is for a graphic which isn’t going to printed, (Printing Standard-150) (Printing Commercial-300) which is for larger files such as posters etc.

The colour mode is also is important when making a Photoshop file; ‘RGB (red, green, and blue) refers to a system for representing the colors to be used on a computer display. Red, green, and blue can be combined in various proportions to obtain any color in the visible spectrum. Levels of R, G, and B can each range from 0 to 100 percent of full intensity.’ yet; ‘The CMYK color model (process color, four color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black).’

cmyk-rgb-colour-issues

Above I opened a Photoshop with the setting CMYK which is the setting for coloured printing, If you chose a particular colour which isn’t available in the format (RGB/CMYK) in this case CMYK that purple box with awarning symbol above it, circled in red – isn’t available within the CMYKformat so it show’s what colour can be used instead below which uses different a different colour switch.

Brand Identity

I looked at image of the ‘Fru Fru’ brand identity, which is a company which has been ‘developing and producing fresh yummy goodies’ for over 10 years within foods/drinks such as; raw juices, power shots, detox salads, nut milks, other detox items. The colours used within the the above graphic are fairly dull, using mainly beige grey brown colours, except for the fruit which aligns the outskirt of the focal point almost framing the menu’s and other items. I like how the fruit is more prominent due the distinct colour contrast from the other items in the image, this is a key point maybe due to the fact ‘Fru Fru’ want to emphasize the growth and use of their fresh fruit.

e3710917387079-562ba80ea4aea

The above menu exploits the use of colour within the typography and throughout the layout generally this is a positive benefit in my opinion as it captivates certain audiences. I’ve been to California twice and there are hundreds of taco/burrito shops which have this exact art layered on the outside of the shops which correlates with general street art/graffiti. This matches the sun and the feel as the colours are both vibrant and positive like they are in California, the point i’m trying to convey is that you wouldn’t find a shop like this in Douglas town as the weather/culture doesn’t match.

The above graphic shows the front of the menu which is jam packed with little graphic icons, mainly of sea food and general meat. This type of crammed layout has an exciting feel towards it which draws the eye around the entire front cover. There is no general layout or rules within composition the designer has stuck too which may emphasize that it is a frequently visited bar, maybe on a busy street with lots of customers. Red and blue (along with black and white) are the main colours which are visible at first glance, this may be because sea food is usually blue and can convey the sea, and everyday meat is usually acknowledged with the colour red, which maybe is a way of visually communicating with the public through the coloured graphic icons.

For the above and below picture I used the Cannon 1200D which had an incredible lens picking out every little detail.

Adjustment layers within Photoshop (4/10/16)

layer masking, smart objects, digital painting, adjustment layers, animation, professional practice; DPI (Digital-72) (Printing Standard-150) (Printing Commercial-300), naming layers/files. RGB / CMYK

thumbnail_unspecified

We initially looked at the image above which shows the common preset effects for the app Instagram. We worked within Photoshop which is one of many software’s which allows you to create the most common effects through manipulating the layer adjustments.

img_7614

The image above I took in the photography room, with 3 point lighting making it easier to recognize the crisp detail of the fruits, especially with the high quality camera and lens. The initial task was to capture an image of fruit, any fruit with any compositional layout, but we had to have taken it ourselves.

capturesssssssss

I then opened the image that I had taken in Photoshop, went to the ‘layer’ menu at the top left of the Photoshop file and found the ‘new adjustment layer’ button which gave you several different editable adjustment layers. We then experimented with the majority of the options available to manipulate and adjust certain layers. Adjustment layers are quite beneficial within Photoshop whilst editing a photo as you don’t have to edit the image directly as it’s in the name adjustment ‘layer’ which is individual to the actual image which is on a separate layer. You can also turn specific adjustment layers on and off to see how different effect look.

captures

‘You use the Levels adjustment to correct the tonal range and color balance of an image by adjusting intensity levels of image shadows, midtones, and highlights.’

As you can see from the properties bar at the bottom left I was fiddling with the adjustment layer ‘levels which is quite a commonly used effect within Photoshop which I already new about, but it was fun playing around with the blacks and whites as it could change the effect of a different adjustment layer entirely. I lightened the whites and decreased the blacks slightly giving it a lighter complexity.

capturess

‘In photography and image processing, color balance is the global adjustment of the intensities of the colors (typically red, green, and blue primary colors). An important goal of this adjustment is to render specific colors – particularly neutral colors – correctly.’

The colour balance adjustment layer is very useful as you can pin-point a specific colour  gradient within the image and increase or decrease the saturation of the colour which can make a huge difference giving the whole image a different feeling/mood (increase the blues – icy cold feeling)

capturesss

Selective color is a post-processing technique where most of a photo is converted to black and white, but some parts are left in color. It originates from the era of toy cameras and lomography. Selective colour is like a more in depth version of colour balance which can target the fundamental colours within a colour such as chnaging the Cyan levels (a greenish-blue color, which is one of the primary subtractive colors, complementary to red.) the Magenta levels (a light purplish red that is one of the primary subtractive colors, complementary to green.) and the yellow and black levels – Selective colour is good /effective when you want to boost or subtract a specific colours original colour.

capturessss

We also looked at the photo filter adjustment layer which allowed to add generic world wide known filters, such as the classic warming and cooling filters. ‘You can apply any Photoshop filter (that has been enabled to work with Smart Filters)—except for Lens Blur, Flame Picture Frame, Trees, and Vanishing Point—as a Smart Filter.’

capturesssss

The ‘black and white’ adjustment layer within Photoshop allows you to exploit the amount of black and white colour/shading which is in original colours such as reds, yellows, greens, cyan’s, blue’s and magenta’s.

capturessssss

After adding the vignette effect by right clicking the layer you want to manipulate it gives you ‘blending options in which you can achive a vignette by playing with the outer glow, and the use of ‘multiply’

capture

‘In the Curves adjustment, you adjust points throughout an image’s tonal range. Initially, the image’s tonality is represented as a straight diagonal line on a graph. … As you add control points to the line and move them, the shape of the curve changes, reflecting your image adjustments.’

capturessssssss

I added a more warmer feeling to the initial photo by using the selective colour adjustment layer and vamped up the magenta.

capturesssssss

The gradient map adjustment layer was my favourite effect as you could ‘trip out’ the image very easily with adjustments of a few effects. You can select/add/switch and adjust specific colours in which you would like to make up the gradient map and this would merge the colours chosen together like shown above to give an exciting ‘whacky’ feel towards it.

Photoshop basic animation/giff

untitled-1capture

To make this quick simple animation within Photoshop you have to switch from the essentials theme to motion, which then adds a timeline shown below which you can then manipulate a sketch and create an animation by turning on and off layers within the motion timeline.

Secondary research of animated GIF

giphy

The animated GIF above is a character that many people will know from the famous American sitcom; ‘The Simpsons’. In my opinion I think this show has a vast target audience from those viewing from the age of 9-40; This is because younger people viewing the show could relate to Lisa and Bart, the older age group can relate to Homer and Marge. Although the humor can be slightly immature it can satisfy a range of people at different ages. As this whole show is an animated family based show I think it would occur mainly to the younger side of the 9-40 yrs but every family can understand the concepts which happen within day-to-day life.

Video Jockey (VJ)

As the name implies, Video Jockey responsibilities are very similar to those of Radio DJ’s, with the main difference being that Video Jockeys introduce music videos on TV, as opposed to introducing songs on the radio. These days, it doesn’t take long for songs to become hits, as a video can run on music television, and will then soon be requested a radio stations across the country.

Video Jockeys are those people who announce to the viewing audience which music videos will be airing, upon which they may go on to give more information on the video or the artist/band. The Video Jockey usually adopts a unique style and delivery, which usually determines their popularity among the general public.

Basic Flash Animation/Manipulation;

running-on-grass

Above is a basic animation made up of 9 different key frames which are all changes within only the legs. To create this animation I initially made the full motion/image changes within their separate frames then made it a symbol by right clicking within the ‘library’ section which will bring up the ‘create symbol’ option, and then selecting all the individual frames then copy and paste them into the symbol which will create a scene which includes the symbol which I called ‘run cycle’. You can then drag the symbol out of the stage and place the ‘run cycle’ on a new layer above from the green ‘grass’. Finally you create a classic tween on the ‘run cycle’ layer by right clicking on the first frame of the symbol bringing up the desired options.

Above show the 9 different leg positions which I made to create the ‘run cycle’ within 1 symbol.

mike1mike2mike3mike4

Above shows the four different key frames which are used to create the animated GIF below; we used the ‘squash and stretch’ technique (In 3D animation, squash and stretch is a technique that is applied to an animated or in-motion characters to give them a more exaggerated movement.) Like shown below.

We used the easing in and out tool within Adobe Animate the definition of this from the website is; ‘Easing allows you to control the speed of a tween to produce realistic motion with pleasing effects. Applying Eases on motion tweens allows you to manipulate the beginning and the end parts of an animation to cause a more natural movement of the object.’

shape-tweens

We did a quick recap on what we learnt previously with shape motion tweens which was influenced by the images below which Will had emailed us. We had covered how to vaguely accomplish the animated GIF’s below within Adobe Animate and Photoshop.

Will’s lesson

Will sent us the Animate file above (the left) via email, in which was synchronized to some background music, we then had to edit the animation to make the dance moves different whether that meant changing key frames or actual layers. This was good because while working within the layered tween and manipulating the original animation this gave me more confidence with exploring the effects available.
